Rebsy Travels

About Rebsy
Who is Rebsy?
Rebsy is a travel obsessed, planet loving, foodie who decided to take the plunge in January 2023, quit my job and convince my partner to join me in raiding our savings in exchange for at least year of slow (ish) travel around the world. Rebsy is also a coming together of Rebecca (Becky / me) and Simon (Sy), clever eh!?
What are you going to do?
We have loved amateur diving for years and, as long time Londoners, never get to spend as much time as we want under the ocean. Our plan is to use this year to upskill ourselves and become dive masters before attempting to circumnavigate the globe.
We are passionate about our planet. We will be doing our very best to prioritise overland and sea travel and attempt to keep to a carbon budget. This won’t always be possible, we already know we will need to take a few flights already. Post-covid, and in a world of easy, cheap and convenient air travel getting up to date information on how to land and sea travel is a REAL challenge. We want to find out what is possible, accept what isn’t and then tell you all about it.
Why are you doing this?
We never took a gap year...
Packing up and setting off to travel the world with a one-way ticket, a backpack and an appetite for adventure has been a long-held dream of ours; but a dream that, as we got older, seemed increasingly far fetched and out of reach. But, in early January of 2023, after a particular tough week of back-to-back Zoom meetings (why do we do it to ourselves?!) enough was enough, things will not change unless we change them and we decided that later that year we would say goodbye to our jobs, our friends, our stability our leafy little flat and hello to a new life - at least for a while.
Where are you going?
Around the world!! There's a lot to be confirmed but we're generally sticking close to the equator (where there’s yearlong diving opportunities) with a few detours to colder climes along the way.
We’ll be sharing where we’ve been, how we got there and where we’re going next on this blog and on instagram @RebsyTravels.
How are you affording this, are you working?
Not to start with, no. All costs are coming from our savings (bye bye finically security) and a small rental income on our flat back home. We haven’t taken a break from working in almost 20 years so are looking forward to investing our life savings in a genuine break.
Because of that we have a very tight budget that will require us to camp and prioritise budget-friendly accommodation especially in more expensive parts of the world. We have mapped a route that avoids really pricey places (Australia, NZ, Americas etc.) and plan to take public transport wherever possible to save costs.
How we get on and average spending by region available on our blog and at @RebsyTravels.
As time goes on, we will be open to, and actively looking for paid and volunteering opportunities especially those that get us close to nature and help us dive on a budget. We’re open for opportunities. Have a look at the portfolio and get in touch below if we can help?
Ok this sounds cool, but what are you actually blogging about?
We are confidently bucking tradition of having a single blog theme, as humans we have a lot of hobbies and interests between us from veggie and vegan food to music production to animals, hiking, drawing, dancing and old school point and click adventure games.
We’ll be using this blog primarily as record of our 'fallow year' knowing it’s unlikely we’ll be able to do this again – but we also want to be helpful. So many of the travel gems we have experience on our previous adventures across the world, from THE BEST garlic naan in Jaffna, to a campsite in front of an abandoned hotel in Kozushima have been from bloggers not guidebooks. Travel blogs have given us the confidence to explore places off the 'TripAdvisor' beaten track and so if we can inspire just one person to do the same our work here is done.
PS. We also really like beer so expect content ranking global beer where to find a perfect pint/ 50cl stop on your travels.
Can I get in touch?
YES – please follow @RebsyTravels on Instagram and subscribe to updates via the link below. This is our first attempt at blogging so bear with us, it wont go smoothly, it wouldn't be an adventure if it did!! We welcome thoughts, feedback, tips and recommendations.
